Air Force Staff Sgt. Brian McElroy, 28, of San Antonio; assigned to the 3rd Security Forces Squadron, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska; killed Jan. 22 when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device while he was conducting convoy escort duties in the vicinity of Taji, Iraq. Also killed was Tech. Sgt. Jason L. Norton.

Morningstar, 27, of San Antonio; assigned to the 562nd Engineer Company, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska; killed Feb. 5 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Stryker engineer squad vehicle in Husayniyah, Iraq. Also killed was Sgt. Jeremiah J. Boehmer.

Army Staff Sgt. Clinton T. Newman, 26, of San Antonio; assigned to the 321st Civil Affairs Brigade, San Antonio; killed Feb. 13 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations north of Deh Rawod, Afghanistan. Also killed were Sgt. 1st Class Chad A. Gonsalves; Staff Sgt. Edwin H. Dazachacon and Sgt. Alberto D. Montrond.

Israel Devora Garcia, 23, of Clint, Texas; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany; killed April 1 when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was conducting a dismounted patrol in Baghdad. Also killed was Staff Sgt. Darrell P. Clay.

Marine Cpl. Andres Aguilar Jr., 21, of Victoria, Texas; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii; died April 2 when the seven-ton truck he was riding in rolled over in a flash flood near Asad, Iraq. Also killed were: Cpl. David A. Bass, Lance Cpl. Patrick J. Gallagher, Lance Cpl. Felipe D. Sandoval-Flores, Cpl. Brian R. St. Germain and Staff Sgt. Abraham G. Twitchell.

Also killed was Chief Warrant Officer 5 Jamie D. Weeks.

Army Lt. Col. Daniel E. Holland, 43, of San Antonio; assigned to the 352nd Civil Affairs Command, Fort Bragg, N.C.; died May 18 of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations in Baghdad. Also killed were1st Lt. Robert A. Seidel III, Sgt. Lonnie C. Allen Jr. and Pfc. Nicholas R. Cournoyer.

Army Sgt. Roger P. Pena Jr., 29, of San Antonio; assigned to 10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.; killed June 14 when his convoy came under enemy small-arms fire during combat operations in Musa Qulah, Afghanistan.

Army Pfc. Kristian Menchaca, 23, of San Marcos, Texas; assigned to 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.; died June 19 when his unit came under enemy small-arms fire while manning a checkpoint during combat operations in Baghdad. He was previously listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown. This incident is under investigation. Also killed were Spc. David J. Babineau and Pfc. Thomas L. Tucker.

17 June

Army Sgt. Reyes Ramirez, 23, of Willis, Texas; assigned to 40th Engineer Battalion, Baumholder, Germany; killed June 17 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations in Ramadi, Iraq. Also killed was Cpl. Robert L. Jones.

Marine Staff Sgt. Benjamin D. Williams, 30, of Orange, Texas; assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; killed June 20 while conducting combat operations in Karmah, Iraq. Army Pvt. Troy D. Cooper, 21, of Amarillo, Texas; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; died Dec. 3 of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Balad, Iraq.

Army Spc. Yari Mokri, 26, of Pflugerville, Texas; assigned to the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division; died Dec. 6 of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while on patrol in Hawijah, Iraq. Also killed were: Sgt. Jesse J.J. Castro, Cpl. Jason I. Huffman, Spc. Joshua B. Madden and Pfc. Travis C. Krege.

 

Army Capt. Travis L. Patriquin, 32, of Texas; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Giessen, Germany; died Dec. 6 of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations in Ramadi, Iraq. Also killed was Spc. Vincent J. Pomante III.

Army Spc. Philip C. Ford, 21, of Freeport, Texas; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry (Airborne), 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska; died Dec. 10 of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee in Baghdad. Also killed was Sgt. Brennan C. Gibson and Pfc. Shawn M. Murphy.

Marine Lance Cpl. Luke C. Yepsen, 20, of Kingwood, Texas; assigned to 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.; died December 14 due to injuries sustained from enemy action in Anbar Province, Iraq. Also killed was Lance Cpl. Matthew W. Clark.

Army Pfc. Paul Balint Jr., 22, of Willow Park, Texas; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Friedberg, Germany; died Dec. 15 of injuries sustained when his unit came in contact with the enemy using small arms fire during combat operations in Ramadi, Iraq.

Army Staff Sgt. Brian L. Mintzlaff, 34, of Fort Worth, Texas; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; died Dec. 18 from injuries sustained when his Bradley Fighting Vehicle rolled over in Taji, Iraq.

Hospitalman Kyle A. Nolen, 21, of Ennis, Texas; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.; killed Dec. 21 as a result of enemy action in Anbar Province, Iraq.

Army Spc. John Barta, 25, of Corpus Christi, Texas; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; died Dec. 23 of wounds sustained from indirect enemy fire during combat operations in Buhritz, Iraq.

Marine Lance Cpl. Stephen L. Morris, 21, of Lake Jackson, Texas; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii; killed Dec. 24 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq.

Army Spc. Aaron L. Preston, 29, of Dallas; assigned to the 9th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany; died Dec. 26 of wounds sustained Dec. 25 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations in Baghdad. Also killed were: Sgt. John T. Bubeck and Pfc. Andrew H. Nelson.

Army Pfc. Nathaniel A. Given, 21, of Dickinson, Texas; assigned to 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, Fort Drum, N.Y.; died Dec. 27 in Baghdad of wounds received from an improvised explosive device that detonated near him while on dismounted patrol. Also killed was Sgt. Christopher P. Messer.

Army Spc. Dustin R. Donica, 22, of Spring, Texas; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska; died Dec. 28 in Baghdad of wounds received from small arms fire while conducting combat operations.

 

Marine Lance Cpl. William D. Spencer, 20, of Paris, Tenn.; assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 3rd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Nashville, Tenn.; died Dec. 28 while conducting combat operations in Anbar province, Iraq. Also killed were Cpl. Christopher E. Esckelson and Lance Cpl. Nicholas A. Miller.

Army Spc. Richard A. Smith, 20, of Grand Prairie, Texas; assigned to the 215th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; died Dec. 31 in Baqubah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated while on a combat patrol. Also killed was Cpl. Jonathan E. Schiller.
